Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, or perhaps a pineapple under the sea … you’ll know who Spongebob is. Whether you’re 5 or 50, we all know who that little yellow square thing is and like marmite, you either love him, or hate him. I think SpongeBob Squarepants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom for Nintendo DS is the same. If you like Nickelodeon characters, traditional platform games and are under the age of 11, you’ll probably enjoy this game, with everyone else it will be a little hit and miss.
As with most kid’s games, the storyline here is nothing amazing and is pretty predictable. Joining forces with various Nickelodeon characters, you must help Spongebob save the universe from the bad guys who are intent on destroying it.
As you play through the game, you never play as one specific character. Instead, each level gives you two characters to play with in which you must switch between at various stages to use character-specific powers. All the favourites are here, from Jimmy Neutron and Danny Phantom to the bad guys including Plankton and Technus.
The idea is that you must play as both a good guy and a bad guy at any one time. So, take the first level for instance which sees you playing as both Spongebob and Technus. Some parts of the level will require you to use Spongebob’s special power (blowing huge bubbles which can elevate both characters to higher platforms) as well as Technus’ special ability of being able to destroy obstructions, allowing the characters to pass through.
The game basically consists of your average platform layout with low platforms, high platforms and various puzzles which present a small challenge to players trying to navigate them. Throughout the game you must switch between characters repeatedly to keep them moving through each level with certain puzzles being meant for specific characters. So for instance, Spongebob may need to blow a bubble to transport him to an essential switch and Technus has to wait on the lower platform until Spongebob has completed this task before he too can continue moving on.
It’s a good concept and tends to work well. The variety of characters adds interest to the game as no two characters play exactly alike. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the levels which are painfully similar to each other with the same puzzles, tasks and layouts. Doing the same thing over and over again can become tedious to the more experienced gamer but baring in mind that this is a game designed for children, and the repetitive nature of the game will probably be ignored by the majority of kids who are just glad to be playing as their favourite TV stars!
Of course, there are enemies in the game and each character has at his disposal, a small collection of attacks, all different from one another but very similar in the style and amount of damage they do. None of the enemies really provide a challenge and it seems as though they’ve just been added to give a little bit of distraction to ploughing through the levels.
Graphically, the characters look good and the game features a good assortment of familiar Nickelodeon environments in which to play. The sound too is fitting for the game with cartoon like noises at every turn but there is no voice acting of which to speak of meaning everything that is said, is said via text. This may present a problem to younger gamers who are still at the early stages of reading.
Overall, the game is a decent title to amuse the children. And it will keep them happy with its array of familiar characters and locations. Unfortunately, as with most games it does have its problems. Whilst playing, I got my characters completely stuck twice where the only option was to restart the level. This shouldn’t happen and I imagine children will grow impatient with this fairly quickly. Also, as already mentioned, the game does have a repetitive nature but that aside, it is a decent game and although anyone over the age of 11 will probably tire of it quickly, younger players will probably love it!
