Set in an alternate history where World War I never ended, Ironstorm places the players on to the front lines of a brutal war that has been raging for 50 years. Set in 1964 American and Occidental troops are fighting against the forces of brutal latter day Genghis Khan who plans to create a Russo-Mongol empire.

The first thing that we noticed about Ironstorm was how difficult it was. We started playing the game on normal difficulty setting and found it almost impossible to get out of our trenches. This was mainly due to the alarming AI of enemy snipers who are often well hidden and duck for cover to avoid being seen and in general the enemies AI is astonishing and provides an interesting challenge to players as enemy troops rarely attack alone. You will often find yourself out numbered and out gunned, as enemy troops seem to try and surround you while firing a barrage of bullets.

While Ironstorm is not the most graphically advanced game on the market the way in which the graphics are presented fits in with the games war like atmosphere, and certain lighting effects can sometimes provide an interesting obstacle to overcome as you will find your view often obscured by the searing sun.

Ironstorm it self plays well and gives gamers the opportunity to play the game in either first or third person perspective. The controls are easy to use and are similar to many first person shooters available today.

The games developers have done a great job of creating a realistic battlefield atmosphere, after leaving the safety of our base camp for the first time; I quickly became confused and started to wonder what was actually going on as the two troops stood to my characters side exploded into pieces after being hit by an enemy shell. Although some of the time you will find yourself wondering what exactly is going on the game recreates a confusing element that must exist on any real battlefield and only adds to the games overall appeal.

Overall Ironstorm offers an alternative to the current craze for World War II based games and while it's not graphically stunning and doesn't play as good as Allied Assault it provides enough for the players to enjoy playing the game.
