After being impressed by hardcore geo-political strategy game Supreme Ruler 2020, we decided it was about time we took a look at the recently released expansion pack, Global Crisis! But does it build on the solid foundations laid by the game?

If you’re unfamiliar with Supreme Ruler 2020, the game is a military based geo-political strategy game. It’s largely aimed at the hardcore end of the strategy genre allowing you to make complex decisions on how you run your chosen country and develop international relationships with other leaders around the world through trade and political alliances, espionage or sheer military might!

The Global Crisis expansion launches separately from the main game allowing you to easily access the new content available to play in the add-on. I’m pleased to say as well that Battlegoat have been quite generous with the amount of new content there is to play through, as the expansion introduces no less then twenty new scenarios. Global Crisis also introduces a new sandbox campaign, which sees international tension mounting as Russia poses a real threat to the rest of Europe and China begins to behave aggressively, ultimately leading the player into World War III.

It’s not just the games single player mode that has had new content added either. Global Crisis also features ten new multiplayer scenarios that focus on quicker play, which means players are less likely to quit halfway through as you no longer have to invest several hours playing.

Battlegoat have resisted the temptation to change large portions of Global Crisis. After all if it’s not broke don’t fix it! Instead subtle changes have been made to the games interface and more in-game tips are available to aid you. Players have also been given greater control over military units and battle groups. However, new players still shouldn’t expect to be able to dive straight in as the game is still pretty much inaccessible to the less seasoned strategy gamer, having a rather steep learning curve.

As well as adding a substantial amount of content Battlegoat has also tweaked the look of the game. Don’t expect any major changes in this department as the game looks pretty much the same, however things do look a little cleaner and sharper then they did when Supreme Ruler 2020 was first released.

Many games companies see expansion packs as a way of cashing in! Usually by adding many features that are nothing more then gimmicks with the hope it will generate high sales. However, for me an expansion pack should be all about offering fans of the game value, which with Global Crisis, Battlegoat has certainly achieved adding hours of gameplay and longevity to Supreme Ruler 2020, making it a great addition.
