It seems the games industry has become somewhat obsessed with zombies of late. With some top titles revolving around the reanimated dead, we’ve had Left 4 Dead, House of the Dead: OVERKILL and Resident Evil 5 to name but a few. Hell even Call of Duty: World at War had a bonus zombie game in it as did Saints Row 2. It seems there’s no escape from the living dead these day and now they’re invading the PlayStation Network with Burn Zombie Burn.
Burn Zombie Burn is a very simple retro shooter with a B-movie styling that sees you trying to survive wave after wave of the un-dead as they attempt to feast on your brains. You take up the role of an everyday guy named Bruce, who was looking to simply spend his Saturday night with his girlfriend Daisy. Until an invasion of zombies ruined his plans!
The premise is simple, shoot, burn and blow up as many zombies as you can before they get you! There’s very little else to it, but that’s not a bad thing as the games simplicity is something that helps make Burn Zombie Burn so addictive and fun to play. There are three main modes to play through, these all pretty much play the same and see you having to earn one of three medals by achieving what seems a ridiculously high score. Free play allows you to play through the games levels and unlock new maps. Defend Daisy mode has Daisy sat in Bruce’s car and you have to earn one of the games medals before the zombies munch on her brains. The final mode is a timed variant of the Free Play mode. The game does feature a few challenges to play through which throw some new ideas into the mix. These include My Exploding Zombie Head and Zombie and a Lawnmower. Whilst they aren’t vastly different from the games main modes they do offer some variation. But the core gameplay behind Burn Zombie Burn makes it so addictive and highly playable that you will often find yourself thinking just one more go. This is something that developers Double Six were trying to achieve with the game, and is of course testament to them for sticking to their plans and implementing them well.
Sadly the area in which Burn Zombie Burn fails to shine is its multiplayer options. The game can be played co-operatively between two players and there’s also a split screen versus mode. But the game completely lacks an online mode to play which is a little disappointing.
The retro theme has been captured perfectly in Burn Zombie Burn, especially visually. Everything from its slight off-set top down camera angle to its humorous looking characters harks back to gaming days gone by. Giving the game that unmistakeable retro feel! Even the games sound fits in well with the theme with sound effects that wouldn’t be out of place in any classic arcade shooter.
Burn Zombie Burn isn’t an innovative title whatsoever, but then that’s not what Double Six were trying to achieve with the game. Their intention was to create a highly playable retro style shooter and indeed they have most definitely achieved this. Burn Zombie Burn is well worth a look to fans of retro shooters with its highly addictive gameplay! Its positives far outweigh its weaknesses and provide a highly entertaining retro shooter experience.
