Being a veteran of the Pro Evolution Soccer games on the big consoles I wasn’t really expecting much from a palm sized version PES, however what I found was a game not to different from what I’d already experienced.
The PSP version of Pro Evolution Soccer 6, while smaller features the same game modes you would expect to find in the static consoles game. PES 6 features League, Cup, Training and Master League modes and of course multiplayer support.
In League you can compete in one of six leagues, five national (English, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and French) and one international. Cup mode lets you set-up your own cup tournament with any teams featured in the game. In training you can practice your general play as well as set pieces and corners. Master League is classed as the games main mode of play, and sees players take control of a team over an unlimited number of seasons. You will have to deal in the transfer market as well as develop young footballers and negotiate player’s contracts. The game also supports wireless play so you can challenge your friends to a friendly game from the comfort of your arm chair, instead of having to go down the park.
The game provides a pretty good challenge, especially on the higher difficulty settings. You will have to work hard to break down a teams defence, guide your passes to team-mates and aim your shots on goal carefully. I was surprised how much the game feels like the PS2 version. It’s all most identical, except it seems to run a little faster, strangely!
Playing games and winning tournaments earns you PES points, obviously you are awarded a large amount of points for winning, but just playing games earns you points. PES points can be spent in the shop to unlock new players and classic teams. They can also be used to buy new goal celebrations and background music among other things.
Graphics wise the game, looks spot-on, it’s presented exactly the same way as the static console version, if you’ve played the game on the PlayStation 2 the games menus will have a familiar feel. Animation in PES 6 is good; players pass, shoot and run in a realistic fashion, although as mentioned above it does seem a little to fast. The pitch looks good in the game, however unlike in static console versions you only play on the one.
Sound in the game is fairly limited during matches, as the game lacks commentary. A voice does scream “goal” when you score, but it sounds a little tinny. Crowd cheering and other sound effects are all present as is music while navigating the games menus and all this is done fairly well.
This PSP version of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 may not offer the same number of teams or leagues that are present in the static console versions but what it does offer is an immersive playing experience that is true to the PES games.
