The Wii isn’t short of Golf games, as the actual movements for the sport fit the control style of the console so well. With this in mind you would think games developers would spend quite some time perfecting the control methods, however many have not and Data Design are no exception to this rule with their Kidz Sport Crazy Mini Golf.

In the game up to four players can take part in a single hole or championship over 9 or 18 holes. The game includes four different courses to play on. The games holes are fairly well designed offering various different obstacles to overcome. Sadly though the games courses are lacking a little in challenge and most players will easily be able to clear the courses with very little thought or strategy.

The game employs two control systems, arcade and simulation! Both require you to hold the Wii remote as you would a golf club. The arcade system requires you to swing the remote backwards in order to set your power and then press the B button in order to take your shot. The simulation control method feels more natural and is the better of the two systems as you simply swing the Wii remote like a golf club in order to set your power and take your shot. However, it’s not the best swing system employed in a golf game as it lacks accuracy of other titles which makes the game some what tiresome to play as your shots often go wayward. This coupled with the fact that every time you clear a hole you have to sit through a load screen that lasts longer then most holes makes you want to turn Crazy Mini Golf off.

On the whole Crazy Mini Golf is a rather frustrating affair, it’s difficult to judge how much power to use in order to clear obstacles and get up slopes and the game offers no assists to view the course to help you judge. Also annoyingly the ball seems to bounce in the air rather easily when trying to pull off rebound shots which nine times out of ten result in the your ball flying out of bounds. However, the most annoying aspect of Crazy Mini Golf is that the ball simply doesn’t like going in the hole! Just when you think you’ve sunk a shot and cleared the hole, out it pops rolling several yards away, it simply bounces off the edge of the cup with far too much ease as if it has no weight at all.

Visually the game is quite quirky, the game features Mii type characters referred to as Nu-Yu’s and feature many similarities to Nintendo’s Miis with the exception that they’re full bodied. You’re free to customise your Nu-Yu to create an in-game representation of you. As you would expect from a game aimed at kids the game utilise lots of colour but in general there’s not much to look at and it’s all rather uninspiring.

The games sound is fairly weak, there’s all the sound effect you would expect to hear from any arcade style golf game and the occasional background sound effect and that’s about it, it just seems as if something is missing! On a more positive note the games soundtrack is fairly quirky, although this is spoilt by the frequency at which the same tracks are repeated.

As there are so many golf games available for the Wii, developers need to get the basics of any new game entering the scene right and with Crazy Mini Golf they simply haven’t. An inaccurate control system, long load times and simplicity of the courses makes Crazy Mini Golf a tiresome playing experience.
