DLC: A Disturbing trend!
Written by: Darren Cartledge Posted: 12th January 2009
I’ve never been the biggest fan of downloadable content, having often thought “why wasn’t this included in the game in the first place?”
It’s often seemed to me like another way for the games companies to relieve us gamers of our hard earned cash, even though we’ve already had to shell out fairly substantial amounts to buy the game in the fist place!
However, in the past few months I’ve noticed a disturbing trend about a lot of the downloadable content that’s been spewed out by the games developers and publishers! That is it’s, basically pointless! Serving as nothing more but as an obvious attempt to fleece gamers, who are already fed up with the high cost of games!
The games companies will argue that all their downloadable content adds value to their titles and yes downloadable content that adds substantial single player campaigns or multiplayer options, prolonging the life of many peoples favourite games does, however there is a lot of crap out there, that gamers are expected to cough up their cash for.
 | | Wow! New outfits! | The recently released “Glamour Pack” for Ubisoft’s Shaun White’s Snowboarding is a prime example, adding nothing more then a few new outfits that could easily have been included in the game from the off, whilst not adding any real value or longevity to the title.
However, Ubisoft aren’t the only guilty party EA have released a number of weapon packs for Dead Space that customise the look and effectiveness of weapons yes you may get a new gun in some but again they don’t introduce anything new in terms of gameplay or extend the life of the game, and if we look through the content available for LittleBigPlanet there are huge numbers of premium outfits to buy and download for sack boy?
You simply have to browse through Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store and you’ll find lots of DLC that does nothing to add to the gameplay of its respective title, all of which, we as gamers are expected to cough up more and more money for.
Some may argue that the cost of such DLC is negligible and yes it may only be small amounts of money we’re talking about, but when it’s churned out on such a regular basis it gets a little worrying for the average gamer, especially when such content has previously been offered free of charge and still is by many games companies.
However, not all DLC is bad, you simply have to look at what Rockstar are doing for GTA IV or Bethesda for Fallout 3 and you will see shining examples of what new content for games should be about! Providing us gamers with hours of new gameplay, new locations to explore and ultimately extending the life of our favourite games, not to attempt to fleece us and deprive us of our cash as they seem to be doing with this pointless content!

Rubbish like this only exisits because of the crappy casual games craze which was created by the equally crappy wii, games companies need to forget about this craze and make more proper games for hardcore gamers cos were the ones that will stick around when the craze dies!!!! |

I think the point been made is that theres too much of it compared to "worthwhile" content like new campaigns. |
