I’m not a big fan of the Dynasty Warriors games! I’ve often found them fairly boring and too hard to follow! So as you can imagine I wasn’t expecting much from Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2, however the game managed to deliver a surprisingly fun playing experience!
So how does Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 differ from other Dynasty Warriors games you maybe wondering? The game is somewhat more streamlined then standard Dynasty Warriors games, focusing more on the action portions of the gameplay rather then the series strategy elements. The game is also easier to follow and you get a clearer picture of what is going on as battles unfold and more importantly, what you’re supposed to be doing! Of course it’s also a lot more fun battling it out in a giant Mech that’s able to launch its self in to the air and unleash devastating combos!
The game features the latest stories from the anime series and introduces several new mobile suit and characters for players to play as. The games main mode allows you to play as several characters all of who have their own story to play through and of course playing as the different characters gives you the opportunity to pilot different mobile suits. As you would expect each mobile suit has its own special moves and abilities, all of which can be customised using new parts you collect as you progress through the game.
Despite this more streamlined approach Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 does still suffer from some of the same issues as past Dynasty Warriors games. Mainly the game can be quite repetitive as to pull off the various combo’s all that is required is for you to bash away on the controller. Although in all fairness this simple approach does make the game more accessible then other games that require you to learn complex button sequences. The games difficulty, like its predecessor feels unbalanced, grunt units are disposed of with extreme ease and the game simply tries to beat you by playing a numbers game. This doesn’t really prepare you for the boss battles when they arrive as the difficulty level increases dramatically. Level variation is also an issue despite looking vastly different and some being set on planet surfaces and others in outer space. They all consist of doing the same thing mainly defeating enemies with in a set area before moving on to the next! However if can over look these issues there’s quite an enjoyable game underneath! One that compels you to have just one more go, as you take down hordes of giant mobiles suits.
Apart from the games story mode, the game also includes several missions that have been especially scripted for the game and are playable using a range of different characters from the anime shows. The game really does offer a lot in the way of content which is always pleasing and adds to the lasting appeal of the videogame. Gundam 2 also includes several multiplayer options for play on the same console and online to extend the games life beyond its vast single player element.
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 looks pretty good, with the mobile suits from the series all recreated well. Animation has been improved upon and the game moves at a pretty good pace. However just like in other games in the series the game sports a rather short draw distance, but this in no way affects the playing experience on offer. One disappointing thing about the game is the lack of cut-scenes between levels with the story progress all being handled with static characters and text on screen. Sound in the game is pretty good, with voice acting taken directly from the TV show, along with the various in-game sound effects and so on.
Whilst Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 may not offer much of a different playing experience to past games in the series. It is much more streamlined and action orientated and filled with various modes and missions to play. The game will appeal to both fans of the Gundam and Dynasty Warriors series and serves up one of the better games in the franchise.
