The Gothic remake is happening, thanks to the success of the playable teaser that was released by THQ Nordic in December.
Gothic was originally released in 2001 by German developer Piranha Bytes, the team also behind games Risen and Elex. It quickly garnered a strong fan base spawning two sequels making it a perfect candidate for a revival.
With players demanding a “grittier and less colourful world”, the new, but still old Gothic is going to be developed with transparency and openness according to THQ Nordic. A new studio is opening in Barcelona and feedback from the playable teaser will the focus of the initial development process.
"We are up for the challenge to develop a full Gothic Remake which will stay as faithfully as possible to the original experience and transport the atmospheric world of Gothic into a high quality look and carefully modernizing certain gameplay mechanics." says Reinhard Pollice Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic.
No release date window has been announced for the game, but it won’t be coming this year, that’s for sure.
